Andy Baker

Trombone
Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies,
University of Illinois at Chicago

Andy Baker is a trombonist, composer, arranger, and educator. Born and raised in London, Mr. Baker was performing professionally at the age of 14 and had appeared on recordings and TV shows by the age of 18.

Mr. Baker toured extensively, performing at major jazz festivals and clubs across the world before relocating to Chicago in 2001. Quickly establishing a reputation as one of the most versatile musicians in town, Mr. Baker performs and records with many of Chicago’s finest jazz and contemporary music ensembles. He is the musical director of the New Standard Jazz Orchestra, is a member of Fulcrum Point, and leads his own sextet, BakerzMillion.

Mr. Baker’s recorded compositions and arrangements—which have been recorded by Phil Woods, SuperBrass (London), and the Depaul University Jazz Ensemble—include works for brass ensembles, jazz orchestras, rock bands, and for commercial television.

Mr. Baker is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he directs the Jazz Ensemble and a combo and lectures in Jazz history.
