Milas Yoes

Trombone
Coordinate of Instrumental Music,
Jazz Studies, and Humanities
at Phoenix College

Milas Yoes regularly serves as an adjudicator and clinician for marching band, concert band, and jazz band festivals throughout the state of Arizona. He has been a featured clinician at Arizona Music Educators Conventions and has directed the Arizona All-State clinic jazz band three times. He has been a featured clinician/adjudicator at the Lawrence University (Wisconsin) Jazz Celebration and the Oklahoma State High School Jazz Band Competition, Collin College Jazz Festival, Four States Bandmasters Association Honors Jazz Band, Glendale District Honors Jazz Band and a four-time director of the Arizona All State Jazz Band II. Every summer he is on the faculty of the Texas All Star Jazz Camp.

His jazz bands have performed for various local and state festivals as well as national conventions including the International Association for Jazz Education, American Federation of Musicians, Super Bowl XXX , as well as the award-winning Phoenix venue, the Nash.

For nine years, Mr. Yoes distinguished himself as the creator and artistic director of an all-city jazz program for students aged 14-19 known as the Young Sounds of Arizona (sponsored by the Phoenix Federation of Musicians).

As a trombonist, Milas has performed with the symphony orchestras in Phoenix, Tucson, and Scottsdale. He also served as principal trombonist of the Greensboro Symphony in North Carolina. Milas has performed with such artists as Perry Como, Sammy Davis Jr., Eddie Fisher, Johnny Mathis, Mickey Rooney, The Temptations, and Ben Vereen. He has also performed with such notable big band arrangers as Mike Crotty, Fred Sturm, Bob Mintzer and Bob Freedman. He is a member of the Kris Berg Metroplexity Big Band.

Milas has a Bachelors of Music Education degree from Sam Houston State University and a Masters of Music degree in trombone performance from the University of Arizona. He has studied the trombone with Per Brevig at the Aspen Music Festival and pursued additional graduate studies at Arizona State University. He has also been a member of the Jazz Residency at Stanford University for several summers, where he studied with Wycliffe Gordon, Delfayo Marsalis, and Steve Davis.
